She watched the sun dip below the horizon, its golden glow reflected on the gentle waves. The breeze carried the scent of salt and memories—some sweet, some bittersweet. It was their favorite place to be, the one spot where life felt unhurried and uncomplicated. But tonight, the air felt heavier, and her heart beat louder in her chest.
He sat beside her, close enough to feel the warmth of his presence but just far enough to remind her of the unspoken distance between them. She had always been able to tell him everything, but now, the words she needed to say stuck in her throat.
“You seem quiet tonight,” he said, his voice breaking the spell of silence.
She forced a smile. “Just thinking.”

“About?”
She hesitated. How could she tell him that she was thinking about him, about them? About the way her world tilted every time he smiled or how her heart ached when he talked about leaving?
Instead, she shook her head and turned her gaze back to the ocean. “Everything and nothing.”
But as the night deepened, the weight of her silence grew too heavy to bear. She reached for her journal, the one place she could say all the things she couldn’t say aloud. She wrote about how much he meant to her, how she couldn’t imagine a world where he wasn’t by her side. How every moment they spent together felt like a fleeting miracle she wasn’t sure she deserved.
When she finished, she closed the journal and held it to her chest, as if the act could steady her racing heart. And then she whispered the words she couldn’t bring herself to say to his face: “Please don’t go.”
The next morning, he found her journal by accident, left open on the chair where she had sat the night before. As his eyes scanned the words, his breath caught. He had always known she was special, but now, he realized just how blind he’d been to what was right in front of him.
He found her by the shore, the early light casting her silhouette in gold. She looked up as he approached, her expression a mix of surprise and vulnerability.
“I read what you wrote,” he said softly. “And I need you to know… I’m not going anywhere.”
Tears welled in her eyes, but this time, they weren’t from sadness. As he stepped closer and wrapped his arms around her, she finally felt the weight she’d been carrying lift. For the first time, she allowed herself to believe that maybe, just maybe, he had been waiting for her too.
